Do new brake pads need a Break-in Period?
Yes, it is very important to perform a proper break-in (also known as "brake bedding") after installing new brake pads. This step allows for the establishment of a stable friction layer between the brake pads and the rotor, thereby improving braking efficiency and durability.
How to break in new brake pads:
● Initial Inspection
Check that the brake pads are installed correctly, the caliper pistons are retracted, all screws are tightened, and the gap between the brake pads and rotor is appropriate.
● Initial Break-in
During the first 30 kilometers after installation, avoid hard braking or frequent braking. Drive at a low speed of about 30-50 km/h and gently apply the brake pedal to allow the new brake pads and rotor surfaces to gradually bed in.
● Mid-term Break-in
Between 30 to 100 kilometers, gradually increase the braking force. Perform a few moderate braking actions to further facilitate good contact between the friction material of the brake pads and the rotor. During this stage, avoid prolonged heavy braking or high-intensity braking, as overheating can affect the performance of the brake pads and even lead to brake fade.
● Completion of Break-in
After 100 kilometers of break-in, the brake system should have reached optimal performance. You can gradually resume normal driving habits, but still be cautious not to suddenly apply excessive braking force.
